A few things...
Iran is out of control. And what's ANYONE doing about it? Nothing. In the few months that he's been in power, President Ahmadinejad has banned all Western music, declared that the Holocaust is a myth, and has no scruples about pursing nuclear weapons. The international community, represented by the United Nations and the Security Council, is merely trudging along as Iran's government continues to pose an active threat against the Iranian people and the West, with most of its attention focused on Israel. This situation best exemplifies the failure of the United Nations to make a forceful statement that can make a positive difference. The United States should not, in any way, intervene with this problem for the sole purpose of exposing the complete and total uselessness of the United Nations.
Onto Cindy Sheehan and others. The War in Iraq has exposed and drawn differences along party lines, for the most part. That is expected, understandable, and even helpful. However, a respect for differences must also exist if progress is to be made. People like Sheehan, Ted Kennedy, etc., are all but willing to talk intelligently and argue professionally about their points of view that I cannot hold any respect for them. Sheehan was invited to attend President Bush's State of the Union address. She became "disruptive," as she wanted to protest the President during his speech. How dare she. Her ignornace and close-minded attitude is childish. There is a time and place to express respective points of view. The State of the Union is the President's opportunity to deliver his perspective; the floor does not belong to Sheehan, and she needs to understand that. She needs to listen, just as we all have had to listen to her. Also, Kennedy's attempt to filibuster the Alito nomination only highlights his seemingly 5-year-old childish mentality who can't argue intelligently. Others like Diane Feinstein, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama are worth listening to. They are not like children with whom one can't reason. Although I may not always agree with them, I listen to what they have to say because it is not...um...what's the right word?...CRAZY.
Now the Oscars. My issue with Brokeback Mountain is miniscule compared to Walk the Line. Walk the Line obtained, among others, nominations for Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Actress for Reese Witherspoon, and yet, it was not nominated for Best Picture. Interesting...considering that the movie Ray was about Ray Charles, just as Walk the Line was about Johnny Cash, and Ray was nominated for Best Picture. I am certainly not expecting Walk the Line to win Best Picture, but for it be snubbed for mere consideration of this category is definitely appalling.
I'm done.
